What a gable carport is
A gable is a pitched roof — two slopes meeting at a ridge, the same shape as a house roof. A single gable is one span of it, running the length of the carport.
The alternative is a flat or skillion roof: a single low slope, simpler to build and the reason a standard carport starts at $12,000 rather than $15,000.
When a gable is the right call
- Your house already has a pitched roof. A skillion carport bolted onto a gabled house reads as an addition. A matching gable reads as part of the building. This is the most common reason people choose it.
- You need the height. A caravan, a boat on a trailer, a 4WD with a roof rack, or a tradesman's van. The ridge gives you clearance a skillion can't without pushing the whole structure up.
- Heat. A pitched roof carries hot air up and out of the space rather than trapping it against a low ceiling.
- When a skillion is the better answer. Single-storey with a low roofline, a tight setback, or nothing tall to park. It costs less and it suits the house better.

How the whole process worksWhat moves the number
$15,000 is a custom single gable carport, designed, approved and built. From there:
- Span. The wider the unsupported distance, the heavier the steel.
- Pitch and ridge height. A steeper pitch and a taller ridge cost more to build, and make approval more likely.
- Ground conditions. Slope, fill, rock or reactive soil all mean more footing work.
- Whether approval is needed. A gable's extra height makes council approval more likely than a low skillion — worth knowing before you choose.
You get a fixed price before you commit, and it does not move afterwards. Deposit is [5–10%], then progressive payments as the work goes up — you are never paying for something that has not been built.
An insulated panel roof can be fitted to a gable; that range starts at $17,000.

Mean height is the measurement that decides approval, and a gable is taller than a skillion — so these more often need it.
500mm from a boundary with your neighbour's written agreement. Approval 2–6 weeks, build about 2 weeks, installation up to 10 weeks from order.

Common questions about gable carports
What's the difference between a gable and a skillion carport?
A gable is pitched with a central ridge, like a house roof. A skillion is a single low slope. Gables suit pitched-roof houses and give more height; skillions cost less and sit lower.
Do I need council approval for a gable carport?
More often than for a skillion, because mean height is what decides it and a gable is taller. We handle the application either way.
Can a gable carport match my house roof?
Usually — pitch and Colorbond colour can both be matched. Send us a photo of the house and we'll tell you how close we can get.

Send us your address, a photo of the space and a rough idea of what you want covered. We'll come out, measure it and give you a fixed price.
